KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak aims to increase the number of local tourists by 20% after being named Malaysia’s Favourite Destination at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair.
Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) acting chief executive officer Mary Wan Mering said the projected increase was based on the 561,000 local tourists last year.
“Sarawak is familiar yet unique. Many have heard about us but have not checked out our many attractions,” she told a press conference at MATTA headquarters here.
“As proof of the state’s enduring popularity, Sarawak has been named Malaysia’s Favourite Destination by MATTA for this fair.
“Why Sarawak? The coming years will see a lot of development – new hotels, new national parks and better air accessibility,” she said, adding that MATTA has been an invaluable platform to promote the state.
STB will launch its “Sarawak Je” campaign at the MATTA Fair in September and promotions in conjunction with AirAsia’s new route between Langkawi and Kuching with four weekly flights starting on Aug 9.
MATTA deputy president Mohd Akil Mohd Yusof said the fair would feature 150 licensed travel agents and MATTA members.
STB has taken up 11 booths promoting more than 100 tour packages from culinary to self-driving holidays, rainforest kayaking and adventure caving.
“The Land of the Hornbill is one of the most popular Malaysia destinations. With its vast wilderness and rich cultural heritage, Sarawak appeals to a diverse range of visitors,” said Mohd Akil.
He said the Sarawak Pavilion will hold lucky draws and social media contests for those buying packages, with prizes including hotel and resort stays for 10 winners a day.
“Go to Sarawak if you haven’t, and if you have, go again – it’s such a big state,” he said.
The 44th edition of the MATTA Fair is expected to attract more than 100,000 visitors from Sept 8 to 10 at the Putra World Trade Centre. Admission is RM4.
